Loreto, Loreto

Fundada el 25 de octubre de 1697 por el Padre Jesuita Juan María de Salvatierra, fue cabecera y madre de todas las misiones de las Californias, ya que de la Misión de Loreto salieron los grupos que fundaron lo que hoy conocemos como Arquitectura Misional de Baja California Sur.

En 1773 la Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto pasó a manos de la orden de los dominicos, que arribaron a la población de Loreto en el mes de octubre del mismo año. Los frailes franciscanos que habían estado en la misión por cinco años, partieron hacia la Alta California para proseguir en su labor evangelizadora.

Por las condiciones físico-naturales, en 1829 la nave principal del templo sufrió estragos, al derrumbarse el techo y el casquete del campanario en un terremoto en 1877. Actualmente se encuentra reconstruida y alberga el Museo de las Misiones, donde se exponen objetos religiosos de los siglos XVI y XVII. Se considera a esta misión 'La madre de todas las misiones de las Californias', como justo reconocimiento al misionero audaz y emprendedor, por eso se considera a Loreto de Salvatierra.

MISSION OF OUR LADY OF LORETO CONCHÓ (1697)

Founded on October 25, 1697 by the Jesuit Father Juan María de Salvatierra, it was the head and mother of all the missions of the Californias, since the groups that founded what we know today as Baja California Mission Architecture came from the Loreto Mission. South.

In 1773 the Mission of Our Lady of Loreto passed into the hands of the Dominican order, who arrived in the town of Loreto in October of the same year. The Franciscan friars who had been in the mission for five years left for Alta California to continue their evangelizing work.

Due to the physical-natural conditions, in 1829 the main nave of the temple suffered damage, when the roof and the cap of the bell tower collapsed in an earthquake in 1877. It is currently rebuilt and houses the Museum of the Missions, where religious objects from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This mission is considered 'The mother of all the missions of the Californias', as fair recognition of the bold and enterprising missionary, that is why Loreto de Salvatierra is considered.
