El sitio de la Misión de Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, fue explorado por primera vez por el Padre Juan María de Salvatierra en 1702; en 1703 visitaron el sitio los padres Francisco María Píccolo y Juan María Basaldúa; éste última funda, allá en 1705, la misión y fue el Padre Francisco Escalante quien inicia, en forma, la construcción de la iglesia de piedra, habiéndose concluido, aproximadamente, en 1766.
A partir de que fue abandonada en 1828, cayó en total estado de ruina, y fue restaurada en diferentes épocas; la más reciente es la que llevó a cabo el INAH, en los años de 1973, conservando sus características arquitectónicas exteriores, mas no interiores.

SANTA ROSALÍA DE MULEGÉ MISSION (1705)
The site of the Mission of Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, was first explored by Father Juan María de Salvatierra in 1702; Fathers Francisco María Píccolo and Juan María Basaldúa visited the site in 1703; the latter founded, back in 1705, the mission and it was Father Francisco Escalante who began, in form, the construction of the stone church, having been completed, approximately, in 1766.
From the time it was abandoned in 1828, it fell into a total state of ruin, and was restored at different times; the most recent is the one carried out by the INAH, in the years of 1973, conserving its exterior architectural characteristics, but not interiors.
